誤りがちな「more than」の使い方

日本の研究者が英語論文でよく使う表現に、「more than」 があります。私が最近チェックした論文でも、次のようなセンテンスがありました。
“The plates should be incubated for more than 18 hours,”
この文を見た時、私には非常に曖昧な表現であると感じられました。18.1時間なら良いのか。19時間だったらどうなのか。
この曖昧さは、日本語の「〜以上」という表現が英語の「more than」 と同じであると考えることから生ずるのではないかと思いました。
ネイティブスピーカーでしたら、この文章には「more than」 ではなく「at least」を使うでしょう。
「more than X」とは、「>X」を意味し、Xは対象に含まれていません。
一方、「at least」は、「≥X」を意味し、Xを対象として含んでおり、日本語の「X 以上」という意味に相当します。
「more than 18」とは、「18を含まない、それより多い数」、「more than 3 mL」は「3 mLより多い量」を意味するだけで、小数点の何位までなら許されるのかといった許容範囲は不明です。
したがってナチュラル な英語とはいえず、読み手を混乱させます。
結論として、日本語の「〜以上」を英語で適切に表現するには「more than」 ではなく「at least」を使うことをお薦めします。

× : “More than 3 mL of blood should be collected.”
○ : “At least 3 mL of blood should be collected.”

× : “The reaction time was more than 1 min.”
○ : “The reaction time was at least 1 min.”

× : “The solution is stable at room temperature for more than 24 hours.”
○ : “The solution is stable at room temperature for at least 24 hours.”

× : “Add more than 10 mL of solvent to ensure complete dissolution.”
○ : “Add at least 10 mL of solvent to ensure complete dissolution.”
